An Employee Promotion involves a change from one job to another that is better in terms of status and responsibilities.

Employee Promotion is when an employee gets an advancement in terms of salary, designation, recognition, salary, and other benefits. In promotion employees progress with a better job with increased responsibility, more prestige, and status. The promotion gives all employees motivation and a sense of job satisfaction. A lot of the time, problems at work, like unrest, frustration, and bad feelings, are caused by issues with promotions. In all kinds of organizations, it is important to have a good promotion plan. It is a decision made by the bosses, and the trade unions have nothing to do with it.

Types of Promotion

There are main 4 types of promotion listed below

Horizontal Promotion

In this type of promotion, the employee’s job title has been changed and his pay has gone up, but his job duties haven’t changed. This is called Upgradation of the employee.

Vertical Promotion

In a vertical promotion, there is a change in status, responsibilities, job classification, and pay.

Dry Promotion

A dry promotion is an increase in duties and status without an increase in pay or other financial benefits. In a university, for example, a professor can become Head of the Department. It just makes the professor more important without giving him or her more money.

Open vs Closed Promotion

An open promotion system is one in which the company is willing to think of anyone in the organization as a possible candidate and also tells people inside the company about job openings. On the other hand, a company is said to have a closed promotion system if it doesn’t advertise job openings or if not everyone in the company can apply for a promotion.

First of all, if you’re good at marketing yourself, you might get a promotion even if you don’t do your best work, but that usually backfires. For one thing, co-workers tend to notice when someone isn’t pulling their weight, and it’s hard to get things done without help from your team. So, do a good job. That means doing well on your official goals, but also trying to work toward the bigger goals of the company. Make sure you deserve the promotion you want.

Discuss your goal with your boss

Don’t keep your boss in the dark about your long-term plans right now. If you want to move up at the company, you need the support of your manager. Be Reasonable and available

You’ll be glad you did when you need a reference, a recommendation, or a job lead. The best way to make connections is to look for ways to help other people.
